Blythewood

Blythewood, South Carolina can trace its history back to the 1850s when the Charlotte and South Carolina Railroad stopped at the train depot there. The stop was not only for passengers, but water to fuel their steam engines as well. At that time the town was named Doko, which is a Native American word for watering place. During those early years of poor roads and horse-drawn vehicles, the depot was the lifeline of the community, providing transportation for cash crops, mail and telegraph communication. There are several large horse farms in the area and some of them, such as FareWell Farms and Onewood, hold events and competitions such as dressage in which local riders can compete. Long Creek Equestrian Centre offers lessons, boarding and trail rides.

Golf is a favorite pastime of residents in the area, boasting several different sites for the Blythewood populace. Crickentree is blessed with rolling hills and is believed to be one of the most beautiful courses in the Columbia area. The Windermere Club is a Scottish style links course featuring rolling fairways. Designed as a test for the experienced golfer, Windermere Club prides itself in offering hospitality as part of the golf experience. Additional courses include The Columbia Country Club and The University Club, home course for the University of South Carolina Golf Team.

To compliment the small-town charm of the south, nearby Columbia offers a sophisticated cultural scene, an active arts community, a wide range of recreation and exciting attractions and spectator sports. Adding to its diversity, Columbia boasts a creative, college town atmosphere and a populace that is proud of its heritage. Columbia attractions are easy to find lying at the convergence of three rivers just downstream from a 50,000-acre lake. Taking pleasure in more than 300 days of sunshine per year, residents take part in a variety of year-round attractions including boating, skiing, hiking and horseback riding. Historical and cultural attractions top the list of things to do, while Columbia also offers a world-class zoo, countless outdoor recreations, festivals and parks.

Whether it's the diverse recreational and cultural opportunities, the friendly people or the beautiful weather, Blythewood offers a quiet living oasis minutes from city life.
